Classification and application of fire cannons

1. Classification by Spray Medium

Fixed fire cannon fire extinguishing systems are divided into three types based on the spray medium: water cannon systems, foam cannon systems, and dry powder cannon systems.

(1) Water Cannon System

A water cannon system refers to a fixed fire cannon system that sprays water-based fire extinguishing agents. It consists of a water source, fire pump unit, fire water cannon, pipelines, valves, power source, and control devices. This system is suitable for fire scenes involving general solid combustibles but must not be used to extinguish fires caused by substances that react with water to ignite or explode.

(2) Foam Cannon System

A foam cannon system is a fixed fire cannon system that sprays foam fire extinguishing agents. It primarily includes a water source, foam liquid tank, fire pump unit, foam proportioning device, pipelines, valves, foam cannon, power source, and control devices. This system is applicable to fire scenes involving Class A, B, and C flammable liquids and solid combustibles. However, it is not suitable for fires caused by water-reactive substances that may ignite or explode.

(3) Dry Powder Cannon System

A dry powder cannon system is a fixed fire cannon system that sprays dry powder fire extinguishing agents. It mainly comprises a dry powder tank, nitrogen cylinder group, pipelines, valves, dry powder cannon, power source, and control devices. This system is designed for fire scenes involving flammable gases such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and natural gas.

2. Classification by Installation Form

Fixed fire cannon systems are categorized into two types based on installation methods: fixed systems and mobile systems.

(1) Fixed System

A fixed system consists of permanently installed fire cannons and corresponding system components. When a fire occurs in the protected area, fire pumps and pipeline valves are activated, and the extinguishing medium is sprayed from the fixed fire cannon nozzles to suppress or extinguish the fire rapidly. Fixed fire cannon fire extinguishing systems are the most widely applied type.

(2) Mobile Cannon System

A mobile cannon system centers on a movable fire cannon, comprising fire extinguishing agent supply devices (e.g., vehicle-mounted/portable fire pumps, foam proportioning devices), pipelines, valves, and other components. If a remotely controlled mobile fire cannon is used, a wireless remote control device is also included. This system enables rapid proximity to the fire source for on-site fire fighting, mainly operated by professional firefighters in fire brigades or enterprise fire departments.

3. Classification by Control Mode

Fire cannon fire extinguishing systems are divided into two types based on operation methods: remote-controlled fire cannon systems and manual fire cannon fire extinguishing systems.

(1) Remote-Controlled Fire Cannon System

A remote-controlled fire cannon system allows distant operation of fire cannons to spray extinguishing agents onto protected objects. It typically includes electrical control devices with wired or wireless remote control modes.
Recommended applications: Explosive hazard areas; sites with high toxic gas emissions; fiercely burning areas with intense radiant heat; large-scale fire scenes with severe potential losses; indoor spaces over 8m in height with high fire risks; and scenarios where firefighters cannot safely approach or evacuate from fixed cannon positions during a fire.

(2) Manual Fire Cannon Fire Extinguishing System

A manual fire cannon fire extinguishing system requires on-site manual operation of fire cannons. It centers on manual fire cannons and includes fire extinguishing agent supply devices, pipelines, valves, towers, and other components. While simple to operate, it requires a safe operation platform. This system is suitable for areas with low radiant heat and easy access for personnel.
